Hotel de Provence – Tarascon
Tourist Attractions
The Provence town of Tarascon, embedded in the heart of the Alpilles mountains at the entrance (point) of the Luberon region, is ideally situated from a touristic point of view : the Avignon Festival (23 km), Les Férias d’Arles (17 km), Nîmes (25 km), horses, bulls, cowherds and pink flamingos in the Camargue (16 – 60 km) not to mention all the other magnificent towns such as Saint Remy and Baux de Provence which are the pride of the Luberon.
Tarascon is a small historic town full of charm. A walk down its quaint streets will enable you to discover its beautiful mansions, the Italian style theatre and the Souleiado Museum - a worldwide famous Tarascon brand of brightly coloured printed fabric.
The imposing fortress, Le Château du Roy René, which was built at the beginning of the XV century, is comparable in its elegance and beauty to the castles inhabited by the Dukes of Anjou.
The inhabitants of Tarascon are very festive and always ready to celebrate the beauty, history and traditions of their town. The most famous event is ‘La Fête de la Tarasque’ which takes place at the end of June to commemorate the victory of the city over the Tarasque, a kind of dragon which was overcome by Saint Marthe in the year 48. During this fête (festival) the lion hunter, Tartarin de Tarascon, created (imagined, invented) by Alphonse Daudet, comes back to life.
